Research on Major Directors Of Horror Genre

3 Jan

In my research for Major Horror films i am going to look at 2 older and 2 more recent horror directors to see the difference in time.
I am going to research a man called Wes Craven, he is a director of many horror films and has been successful in having top horror movies. He was born in August 2nd 1939, into a strict Baptist family in Cleveland, Ohio. He used to be a Humanities professor but left this career to pursue a passion in sound editor and production assistant for low-budget film companies but soon began to direct his own horror movies. These films include, Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes and ‘Summer of Fear’ but his most successful film which was called ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ And then hit it big with his film ‘Scream’.

A nightmare on Elm street trailer

this is a trailer of A nightmare on welm street, this film was directed by wes Craven and was made in 1984 and was very successful for a horror film which then set him to do other major horror films.

Wes craven uses the style of realism. This means that he uses more things that arnt realistic which means that he uses more effects to create something scary instead of it being done on its own. this is shown in nightmare on elm street because the main character freddy kruegur isnt real as he has a hand made out of metal and blades as fingers this isnt a realistic cereal killer.

John Carpenter
John Carpenter was Born on January 16, 1948 and raised in Kentucky, he attended film school at USC, where he won an Oscar for Best Live Action Short. His first film was a low budget film called ‘Halloween’ This had gotten John into the limelight and set out on another film called ‘The Fog’ and a remake of ‘The Thing’. But john seemed to have more success in his low budget films as the only high budget one he had made called ‘Big Trouble In Little China’ wasnt a success so he carried on with low budget filming to then be known as an influential director.

This trialer shows that he uses alot of sounds and screams to draw the attention of the viewer. This is done to make the atmosphere more scary with the use of darkness.

John carpenter uses the style of realism.  This means that the things included in his films are realistic, this is shown in his film halloween because it is a use of an actual time of year, seasonal holiday that are celebrated. and as halloween is usually associated with fear he seems to have extended this by making a realistic event in which could happen such as a cereal which is a man that wheres a mask to hide his identity.

Danny Boyle
Danny Boyle was born on 20 October 1956 and  is a English filmmaker and producer. He is best known for his work on films such as Trainspotting, 28 Days Later, Millions, Sunshine, Slumdog Millionaire and a film which is coming out called 127 Hours.

This trailer shows a film that danny boyle has directed. It again shows that his style uses lots of fast cuts which go with the music he choses. Also the beggining of his films seem to be very happy until there is an all of a sudden change in the mood which gets the audience intreged. He uses these to make it obvious that its of the horror genre.

Danny boyle uses the style of social realism. This is shown by the use of real life situations as in 28 days later they are using scientific research and no unrealistic characters that seem scary. He also uses animals and diagetic sounds so that it is obvious its real which creates a more eerie atmosphere as the audience know it could happen.
